Digital audio without interference

Toslink Optical Audio Cable — Lossless Digital Sound, Braided Nylon Jacket

Your home cinema or soundbar deserves better than a low-end cable. The Elfcam optical audio cable uses Toray fiber (Japan) inside a braided nylon jacket for digital audio transmission free of distortion and electromagnetic interference — from the first to the last watt.

Which length should you choose for your setup?

The optical audio cable is not sensitive to length when it comes to signal quality (unlike copper). Simply choose the length suited to the distance between your source and your amplifier or soundbar — with a small margin for cable routing.

1 m — 2 m

Devices side by side on a TV unit. TV ↔ soundbar, PS5 ↔ amplifier, decoder ↔ soundbar.

  • Compact TV unit
  • Console + amplifier in the same rack
  • PC + desktop DAC

3 m — 5 m

Classic home cinema setup. Wall-mounted TV + AV amplifier on a low cabinet, or routing behind a partition wall.

  • Wall-mounted TV + floor-level amplifier
  • Discreet skirting board routing
  • Standard living room

6 m — 10 m

Large room or semi-professional setup. No signal degradation regardless of length.

  • Large living room
  • Dedicated home theatre
  • Studio / stage
Good to know: An optical audio cable (S/PDIF Toslink) transmits a binary digital signal. Unlike copper cables, length does not affect sound quality — a 10 m cable delivers exactly the same result as a 1 m cable, as long as the connectors are clean and properly seated.

Why choose an optical cable over a copper cable?

Zero electromagnetic interference

A copper digital audio cable picks up noise from other cables (power, HDMI, network) and injects it into the audio signal. The optical cable transmits light — no electromagnetic field can affect it. The result: total silence between tracks, preserved dynamics.

  • No hiss or 50 Hz hum
  • Ideal in rack bays with many cables
  • Perfect near power cables

Toray fiber — Japanese quality

The optical core is manufactured by Toray Industries (Japan), one of the world's leading producers of POF plastic fibers (Polymer Optical Fiber). This fiber offers minimal attenuation over short distances and a lifespan far exceeding generic plastic fibers.

  • POF fiber 980/1000µm — Toslink standard
  • Attenuation < 0.15 dB/m at 650 nm
  • Superior bend resistance

Braided nylon jacket + reinforced connectors

Unlike the thin plastic cables from low-cost manufacturers, the Elfcam braided nylon jacket resists repeated twists, heat and abrasion. The Toslink connectors use the standard format (JIS F05) with a protective cap included to protect the optical face when the cable is unplugged.

Supported audio formats

The Toslink S/PDIF cable supports all common digital audio formats:

  • PCM stereo — CD, streaming, TV
  • Dolby Digital 5.1 — DVD, Blu-ray, decoders
  • DTS 5.1 — Blu-ray, games
  • Dolby Atmos / DTS:X in pass-through (via eARC)

For native uncompressed Dolby Atmos, prefer HDMI. Toslink only supports Atmos in pass-through from eARC.

Frequently asked questions — Toslink optical audio cable

1What's the difference between an optical audio cable and an HDMI ARC cable?

The Toslink (optical S/PDIF) cable and HDMI ARC/eARC both transmit audio from the TV to an amplifier or soundbar, but their capabilities differ:

  • Toslink: PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 — 18 Mbps bandwidth
  • HDMI ARC: similar to Toslink, via the existing HDMI cable
  • HDMI eARC: uncompressed Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, up to 38 Mbps

For 5.1, Toslink is perfect. For native Atmos, prefer HDMI eARC.

2Does the length of the optical cable affect sound quality?

No. The S/PDIF Toslink signal is binary digital — no gradual degradation. In practice, Toslink cables operate without loss up to 10 m under normal conditions of use.

3My TV has a Toslink output but I have no sound — what should I check?
  • TV audio format: select "Bitstream" or "Dolby Digital" in the sound settings (not "PCM auto")
  • Cap removed: remove the protective cap on both ends
  • Correct insertion: you should feel a slight click — the red light should be visible at the end of the cable
  • Right input: select "Optical" or "S/PDIF" on the amplifier or soundbar
4Does this cable support Dolby Atmos?

In pass-through only. Toslink can carry a compressed Atmos stream (DD+), but not the uncompressed TrueHD that requires HDMI eARC. If your decoder sends a DD+ Atmos stream, your compatible Atmos amplifier will receive and decode it.

5Toslink and optical S/PDIF — are they the same thing?

Yes. Toslink is the name of the connector (Toshiba), optical S/PDIF is the protocol. Both terms refer to the same cable. Not to be confused with coaxial S/PDIF (orange RCA cable), which is not compatible.

6How do I clean a dirty Toslink connector?
  • Gently blow into the connector or use compressed air
  • Wipe the optical face with a cotton swab lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol
  • Let it dry for 30 seconds before plugging it back in

The protective cap included with the Elfcam cable prevents this problem — remember to put it back in place when the cable is unplugged.

7Is this cable compatible with all AV amplifiers?

Yes. The Toslink connector (JIS F05) is a universal standard since the 1980s. All AV amplifiers, home cinema receivers and soundbars with an optical input are compatible — Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Sony, Samsung, LG, etc.

8What are the delivery times and available lengths?

The Elfcam Toslink optical audio cable is in stock in France, available in several lengths. Dispatched within 24 working hours for orders placed before 2pm. Delivery within mainland France in 2–3 working days. Select your length directly on the product page.
